Complete scissor set for layers and texture: the stylist’s tools
To work well on layers and texture you need five scissors with different functions: precision, style, long blade, thinning shears and double-tooth texturizing shears. The last one makes the biggest difference: it blends the levels without leaving lines and turns a correct layered cut into one that moves.
Why layered cuts put your tools to the test
A layered cut is made of several lengths that have to merge. Each stage calls for a different movement: setting the base line, building the levels, removing weight where the hair is thick, blending, finishing the ends. With fewer tools you still get there, but with more steps and more corrections. You will find more technique in the article layers: the art of bringing hair to life.
The 5 scissors in a layered cut, stage by stage
- Base line with the long blade. The perimeter is set with the TSS68, 6.8 inches: wide sections, few closures, a continuous line.
- Building the levels with the precision scissors. The layered sections are cut with TK Master or ELLE PRO Cut, which give control over angle and length.
- Managing weight with the thinning shears. If the hair is very thick, lighten inside the sections with the 30-tooth DENTATA PRO CUT, without touching the surface layer.
- Blending with the texturizing shears. The transitions between levels are softened with the Suprema, 25 double teeth: it takes little hair at a time and merges lengths without lines.
- Dry finishing with the sword-blade scissors. The final movement of the ends is built with the X SERIES, using slide cutting and point cutting.
Not every cut needs all five stages. But when they are needed, having the dedicated tool saves time and corrections.
The scissors that make the difference: double teeth
If you already have thinning shears, you often use them for blending too. But the result is different: thinning shears remove a lot of hair with each closure and can leave marks on transitions. Double-tooth shears have teeth on both blades, cut less and in a more distributed way, and make lightening progressive. The difference is explained in the article thinning or texturizing shears.

FAQ
Which scissors do you need for layered cuts?
A precision pair to build the levels, a long blade for the base line, thinning shears for weight, double-tooth shears for blending and sword-blade scissors for dry finishing.
Can you blend layers with thinning shears?
You can, but thinning shears remove a lot of hair with each closure and may leave marks. For soft blending, double-tooth shears are better suited.

Those who work a lot on layers and texture usually use five scissors with different functions: precision, style, long blade, volume and texture.
