Which barber scissors should you choose?

For scissor over comb you need a long blade that covers the comb in a single pass: the most direct choice is the 7″ TS7. If you alternate fades, perimeters and slide cutting, the 6.8″ TSS68 with sword blade is the most complete. If you want comfort for long working hours, the X SERIES in 6.5″ has an offset handle.

Why a long blade for scissor over comb

In the scissor over comb technique the blade works parallel to the comb: the longer it is, the fewer passes you need and the more even the fade. Blades from 6.5″ to 7″ are usually used for scissor over comb. Learn more in the article why 7 inches for scissor over comb.

Scissor over comb: how it works

The comb lifts the section and acts as a guide; the scissors cut what sticks out: only the thumb moves, while the still blade, held by the ring finger, stays steady and parallel to the comb. You work up from the nape with continuous, even passes, keeping comb and blade parallel at all times: that is how the fade stays even and free of steps. Long, well-balanced, sharp scissors reduce the number of passes and the strain on the wrist, especially when men's cuts follow one another all day.

Straight blade or sword blade?

The straight blade with a fine tip of the TS7 is precise on the comb and when blending. The sword blade of TSS68 and X SERIES glides through the hair without pushing it, useful for slide cutting and softening fades. The differences between edges are explained in the guide on beveled, convex or semi-convex blades.
