Scissors for bob cuts: why you need a long blade

A bob needs long-blade scissors because they cut a wide section with fewer closures, and every closure saved is one less possible step in the line. A blade of around 6.8 inches covers in one movement what short scissors do in three or four, making the perimeter more continuous and clean.

The problem with short scissors on a bob

A bob is an unforgiving cut: the base line is visible from every angle. With 5.5-inch scissors, cutting a perimeter means closing and reopening many times as you move along the section. Each time you restart, the blade can shift its angle or height slightly, and small steps appear in the line that need correcting.

Short scissors remain essential for detailing, outlines and fringes. But for the perimeter of a bob, a one-length cut or a long bob, the right tool is a different one.

What a long blade does

  • Fewer closures: a longer blade covers more hair with each cut.
  • A more continuous line: fewer restarts mean fewer points where the line can vary.
  • Wide sections: you can work on wide sections, useful for one-length cuts and long perimeters.
  • Slide cutting on lengths: with a long convex blade you can glide along the section to soften the perimeter without losing weight.

TSS68: the long blade in the TOUCH system

The TSS68 is the TOUCH scissors dedicated to the line function: 6.8 inches, VG10 steel, sword blade with a raised spine, Full Convex edge and Teflon Tech. It is designed for bobs and perimeters, slide cutting and slicing on wide sections. The raised spine gives the long blade stability, and the convex edge lets it work in gliding techniques too.

One-length or textured bob: does the scissor change?

For a one-length bob, with a sharp, compact line, the long blade sets the perimeter and the precision scissors finish outlines and details. For a textured bob, after the perimeter you work with gliding techniques and point cutting to add movement to the ends. You will find the differences between the two cuts in the article textured bob and layered bob, plus more on the return of the 90s bob.

Evoluto System: 4 scissors, including the long blade

The long blade does not replace the other scissors; it completes them. In the TOUCH system it joins the three core functions and forms the Evoluto System:

  1. Precision: TK Master or ELLE PRO Cut, for outlines, fringes and finishing.
  2. Style: X SERIES, for slide, slicing and dry cutting.
  3. Long blade: TSS68 for the salon, or TS7 Barber for scissor-over-comb work.
  4. Volume: DENTATA PRO CUT, 30-tooth thinning shears.

And if you are a barber?

In men’s cutting, the long blade is mainly for scissor over comb, where the scissors must follow the comb along its whole length. In that case, choose the 7-inch TS7 Barber in the Evoluto System instead of the TSS68. Learn more in our guide to barber scissors for scissor over comb.

When you need the Evoluto System

  • You do lots of bobs, long bobs and one-length cuts.
  • You often work on medium to long hair with wide perimeters.
  • In men’s cutting you use scissor over comb a lot.
  • You already have the core scissors and want to add the missing function. If you are starting from scratch, read which scissors to buy when you open a salon.

If, besides perimeters, you work a lot on layers and blending, consider the complete set for layers and texture.

FAQ

Which scissors do you need to cut a bob?

To set the perimeter you need long-blade scissors of around 6.8 inches that cut wide sections with few closures. For outlines and finishing, add a 5.5 or 6-inch precision pair.

Why does a bob end up with steps?

Often because the scissors are too short for the section: many closures are needed and the line can vary each time you restart. A long blade reduces restarts and makes the line more continuous.

Are long scissors good for detailing too?

No, for detailing and fringes a long blade is awkward. That is why in the Evoluto System the long blade works alongside the precision pair rather than replacing it.

How much does the Evoluto System cost?

The price shown for the 4-scissor kit is the sum of the individual scissors and depends on models and lengths. Request a quote for the System: we will offer you our reserved terms.
